Fiesta - A Journey Through Festivities

Description of Book

Hardback

RRP £20

A journey through human festivity, told through colourful travel narratives set at some of the world's most eye-catching festivals and interweaved with insights from the fields of anthropology, history, psychology, and folklore, examining why we celebrate festivals in the ways we do. Fiesta explores the vibrant tapestry of human festivity, delving into the extraordinary lengths to which we go to express our cultures and commemorate life's milestones. From drunken pilgrimages to sacrificial funerals, national days to neo-pagan necromancy, festivals represent human culture at its most vivid and varied, and the resulting account is both a rich collection of travel writing and an anthropological exploration of the roles that festivals play in society.

Through colourful characters, vibrant sights, and varied locales, Daniel Stables takes a curious, humanistic look at festivals across the world, unravelling the universal threads that run through our diverse global celebrations.

About the Author

Daniel is a travel authoy and writes about travel and culture for a variety of print and online publications, including BBC Travel, National Geographic Traveller, The Independent, The Times, Rough Guides and Lonely Planet. I also regularly appear as a guest on travel podcasts and radio shows, and host my own podcast on food and travel, Hungry Ghosts.

He has also authored, co-authored or contributed to more than 30 travel books for Rough Guides, Lonely Planet, DK Eyewitness, Insight Guides and Berlitz, on destinations including Indonesia, Nepal, Oman, Mexico, Tokyo, Thailand and Andalusia.

In 2021, he was shortlisted for Freelance Travel Writer of the Year in the Freelance Writing Awards, in 2024 was shortlisted for Travel Writer of the Year at the ANTOR Media Awards and Consumer Writer of the Year at the Travel Media Awards, and in 2025 was a finalist for Domestic Travel Writer of the Year at the TravMedia Awards.
